Metal (von englisch metal ?Metall?) ist eine Musikrichtung und Subkultur, verwandt mit der Rockmusik. Die Bezeichnung ist die Kurzform des Begriffs Heavy Metal, der heutzutage allerdings nur noch die ursprüngliche Form dieser Musik bezeichnet (s. Heavy Metal). Ihre Ursprünge liegen im Bluesrock und dem Hard Rock Anfang der 1970er; sie zeichnet sich vor allem durch eine gitarren- und schlagzeugzentrierte Klangfarbe aus.
